FIRST AVENUE presents the premier of SPONTANEOUS EARTH a Recyclable Multi-Media Earth Day Observance on Tuesday April 21st and Wednesday April 22nd (Earth Day) 1998 at Washington Square Church/134 West 4th Street at 8:00 PM. Historic Washington Square Church is located in the heart of the Manhattan's West Village one block East of 6th Avenue close to the numbers 1, 9, 6, A, C, E, and F trains.

Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10 - $5 for students and seniors.

First Avenue has invited two quartets to appear with them at this premier event: Talujon, the virtuoso, award winning percussion quartet; and FAve (First Avenue Vocal Ensemble), First Avenue's newly organized vocal quartet of women's voices, which is making its debut. Also joining First Avenue is Cecilia Arana, the pop/new music singer/actress, whose appearance with Newband performing the music of Harry Partch and whose work with the students at the Earth School in the East Village make her an ideal addition to the cast of Spontaneous Earth.

Spontaneous Earth is inspired by various cycling components of the living Earth. Commissioned by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, this 120 minute work evolves/cycles through the twelve pitches of the western scale, the Four Seasons, Ying/Yang, the Rainbow, the Elements, and the spontaneous sounds and events of life.

THE ARTISTS

Twelve performers will realize this recycling structure with spoken and sung texts, drawings and sampled sound-thoughts from the children at the Earth School, collected/found percussion and instrumental sounds, and improvised electro-acoustic music. First Avenue has created a metaphor for the living Earth and its dynamic, spontaneous, simple, and chaotic beauty with percussion, voices, electronics, computers, double reeds, whistles, computer generated graphics, double bass, piano, synthesizers, and an assortment of instruments from across the globe.
